Robinho sentenced to 9 years in prison over sexual assault

Former Manchester City star Robinho has been sentenced to nine years in prison for rape.

Robinho, who now plays for Atletico Mineiro in his homeland, played for AC Milan from 2010 to 2015.

Although this is a guilty verdict and a nine-year prison sentence awarded, the Italian justice system includes several levels of appeal.

A statement on his Instagram page on Thursday night said that he had "already defended himself against the charges, maintaining that he played no part in the incident".

The Sun reports the former Manchester City ace is one of a group of five convicted of assaulting an Albanian girl in a Milan nightclub on January 22, 2013.

Robinho has a right to two appeals and Italy would only seek extradition once this legal process is exhausted, a source said.

It added that "all legal steps" were "already being taken regarding this decision".

Five other people were also accused of the same crime, but their sentences are not yet known. He has 100 global caps for his country.

He first made his name at Brazilian side Santos before moving to Real Madrid in 2005 as a "Galactico".

Robinho played over 40 games for Manchester City between 2008 and 2010 after signing from Real Madrid.

The incident, which the player has insisted he played no part in, occurred when the 33-year-old was at AC Milan following his departure from the Etihad in 2010.

Robinho was playing for the Rossoneri at the time. After a brief stay at Chinese team, Guangzhou Evergrande, he joined Atletico Mineiro past year.
