Apple Heart Study App Explores Technology-Health Connection

KardiaBand attached to Apple Watch

According to a landing page updated by Stanford Medicine, the study is open to USA residents 22 years or older that have not been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and own at least an iPhone 5S and a Series 1 Apple Watch. It's a medical condition that can go undetected for years and happens to be the leading cause of stroke. The sensor's unique optical design gathers signals from four distinct points on the wrist, and when combined with powerful software algorithms, Apple Watch isolates heart rhythms from other noise.

Apple Watch users are now able to enroll in a new study Apple is conducting with Stanford University School of Medicine, which uses the device's heart-rate monitor to check for an irregular heart rate. In the past year, Stanford has funded a number of studies on digital health, and the use of the Apple Watch in multiple areas of medicine. Once the Apple Watch detects an irregular heart rhythm, the user will be virtually connected to an American Well physician.

- In some cases, the doctor may recommend a BioTelemetry electrocardiogram (ECG) patch for additional monitoring.

Available for iPhone and Apple Watch users in the USA the Apple Heart Study app represents part of a "first-of-its-kind" research project that seeks to establish the potential use of wearables such as Apple Watch in detecting atrial fibrillation (AFib) - a condition associated with an increased risk of strokes and heart failure. "We're excited to work with Apple on this breakthrough heart study". When Apple and Stanford are ready to include you in the study you'll get a notification on your iPhone and Apple Watch.

Apple declined to say how long the study will run.

Along with the KardiaBand, an mHealth-enabled watch band that records a patient's EKG in 30 seconds, AliveCor is launching SmartRhythm, a feature within the company's Kardia mobile app that allows Apple Watch users to synch heart rate and activity sensors in the watch to track heart rate and activity. Stanford will use the study to further evaluate the effectiveness of the Apple Watch as a tool of proactive health care.

AliveCor CEO Vic Gundotra told MobiHealthNews he doesn't see Apple - who he praised as a helpful partner in bringing his device to market - as competition. Today, that product has finally launched in the US. "Apple has announced they're working with a PPG sensor, which I think everybody is, and that's great".
