Yemen rebel leader Ali Abdullah Saleh seeks dialogue amid escalating violence

Riyadh Launches Cyber Campaign to Support Yemen’s Saleh

The coalition has also been accused of committing war crimes through indiscriminate attacks on residential areas in cities controlled by the rebel forces.

In response, Houthi chief Abdul-Malek al-Houthi made a surprise speech this morning, calling on Saleh and tribal leaders to intervene to stop the internal bloodshed and reunite the internal ranks to face the "aggression", in reference to the Saudi-led military coalition.

Yemen fell into civil war in 2014, when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. Violent clashes between rival factions in Yemen's rebel-held capital signal the disintegration of the rebel alliance at war with a Saudi-led coalition for almost three years.

Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said he was open to talks with the Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Huthi rebels, as his supporters fought the rebels in the capital, Sana'a.

Saleh's supporters managed on Saturday to seize control of several embassies and government buildings from the Houthis.

He added: "We will deal with them in a positive way and what happened to Yemen is enough".

"Our country is under aggression and the Houthis are the cause of this aggression due to their practices", he said. The Sunni-ruled kingdom heads a military coalition allied with the internationally recognized government of Yemeni President Abed Rabbou Mansour Hadi. There has been no official word on casualties but the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that dozens were killed and hundreds were wounded in the fighting.

In a statement carried by the Saudi-owned Al-Hadath channel, the coalition said it was "confident of the will of the leaders and sons" of Saleh's GPC party to return to Arab fold.

"The decision of Popular General Congress to take initiative and align itself with its people will free Yemen from loyal militias to Iran", he said in a statement released by Saudi SPA Agency, in reference to Saleh's party.

Saleh says he's ready for a "new page" with the Saudi-led coalition he's been fighting with the Houthis since the gulf state joined the conflict in 2015. Saleh has accused the Houthis of seeking to monopolise power and the rebels have accused the strongman of treason over his suspected contacts with Saudi Arabia.

He told Yemenis all across the country that if they support him, "to defend the nation, the republic and the revolution".

The GPC appealed to the army and security forces to remain neutral in the conflict.
