United States withdraws from United Nations migrant pact

US pulls out of global compact on migration

"I regret [the] U.S. decision to disengage from [the] process leading to a United Nations global compact on migration", Miroslav Lajcak tweeted after the decision was announced.

In 2016, after the Obama administration's decision to join the UN's New York Declaration on Refugees, America joined the process of agreement.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations migration agency, the signatories of the document, that was to pave the way for the adoption of the global compact for migration in 2018, have pledged to protect the rights and freedoms of migrants, "regardless of their migratory status", facilitate their integration, fight racial and other forms of discrimination.

In a statement released late on Saturday, the US mission to the United Nations noted that President Donald Trump made the decision. She said that the global view in the New York Declaration is not favorable to American sovereignty.

The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Hayley, informed the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, at the weekend that Donald Trump was not willing to continue with an American commitment to the UN global compact on migration.

The UN General Assembly president expressed regret at the U.S. decision, saying no one nation can manage worldwide migration alone.

In a statement, the U.S. Mission said the UN's New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants - recognized by the U.S. previous year under the Obama administration - "contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with U.S. immigration and refugee policies". We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country.

Declaring that he was "elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris", Mr Trump complained that the accord gives other countries an unfair advantage over United States industry and destroys American jobs. "This should not disrupt the clear, unanimous outcome of the New York Declaration for such a global compact". "But our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone".

"The role of the United States in this process is critical as it has historically and generously welcomed people from all across the globe and remains home to the largest number of global migrants in the world", a spokesperson for UN General Assembly president Miroslav Lajčák said in a statement.

Three days of preparatory talks begin in Mexico on Monday ahead of the start of formal negotiations in February over the non-binding pact.

More recently, American pulled out of the Paris-based culture and education body, Unesco, accusing it of "anti-Israel bias".
