Hadi calls on Yemenis to rise up against Houthis after Saleh's death

Houthi rebel supporters celebrated the death of former Yemen president Ali Abdullah Saleh

Sources in the Houthi militia said its fighters stopped Mr Saleh's armoured vehicle with an RPG rocket outside the embattled capital Sanaa on Monday and then shot him dead.

Yasser al-Awadi, the GPC's assistant secretary-general, was also killed.

Smoke rises during a battle between forces loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthi fighters in Sana'a, Yemen on December 2, 2017.

Sources close to Saleh said that the head of the former president's security detail, Hussein al-Hamidi, was also killed, but did not provide further details. These arrangements won't be achieved after Saleh was assassinated unless a new alliance is formed with Saleh's forces to defeat Houthis inside Sanaa. If the trucial parties agreed on how to rule Sanaa, this will accelerate its rehabilitation and make it the country's administrative capital once again, after all government activities were previously transferred to Aden as a temporary capital. The people of Sanaa, the leaders of the General People's Congress and the commanders of Saleh's forces must realize the importance of the change Saleh adopted, which led to his assassination, and must advocate for his decision and project. What about the wild wolves, Houthis? In downtown Sanaa, Saleh's forces clashed with the Houthis, reportedly killing more than 100 people.

Yemen's deposed former leader Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed on Monday during clashes in the capital city of Sana'a, marking a risky new turn in the country's civil war.

The Houthis, who are believed to be backed by Iran, stormed Sanaa in September 2014.

Speaking later on television, President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, the leader of the internationally recognized government, called on Yemenis to unite against the Huthis.

In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened to reinstate Hadi's government.

Any hope of the coalition that Mr Saleh could have been bought off to help turn the tables against the Houthis after a protracted stalemate, in which a Saudi-led blockade and internal fighting has exposed millions to hunger and epidemic, has been dashed. Three days earlier, Saleh had turned against his Houthi rebel allies, switching sides in a conflict that has been raging for roughly three years.

"You can not say this is the end of his political movement, but it's a very big blow", he said.

Former U.S. Diplomat David Mack, now with the Middle East Institute, told VOA Saleh was "one of the smartest political operatives in the Arab world", and the former president believed he had been unjustly driven from office by countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, in accord with the United States.

"Let's join hands to end the control of these. criminal gangs and. open a new chapter to rid our beloved Yemen of this nightmare", Hadi said from Saudi Arabia, where he lives in exile. "Before there were two leaderships, two different agendas, two different ways how to win the war". Saleh's death complicates this, though control of the his fighters may shift to his son, Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, or his nephew, Tariq.
