Climate change: Obama regrets lack of U.S. leadership

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is hosting the North American Climate Summit in concert with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Obama and Democrats have spun the long-running sarcastic joke to upended criticism from conservatives who blamed the president for problems that had little to do with his policies. "It was going to be up to all of us".

Obama talked about the lack of USA leadership on climate issues in Paris on Saturday.

Earlier this year, Trump declared that the USA would no longer be a part of the landmark 2015 accord with 196 countries, claiming the non-binding agreement imposed unfair standards on American businesses and workers.

Obama spoke to mayors in attendance for about 15 minutes acknowledging the difficulty of addressing climate change now that the US does not belong to the Paris agreement. "And that's a hard position to defend".

The more than 50 mayors and global climate leaders converged on the city this week for the North American Climate Summit, part of a commitment to addressing climate change on the local level.

There are many specific pledges in the charter signed today, including: investing in public transit and reducing the carbon footprint in new and existing buildings and infrastructure.

"The good news is that the Paris agreement was never going to solve the climate crisis on its own". In signing the charter, cities also commit to tracking and publicly reporting city emissions.

Dressed casually in a jacket but no tie, Obama was introduced by Emanuel, who was his first White House Chief of Staff and had invited him to speak for 15 minutes off the meeting's official agenda.

They will build on UNESCO's updated Strategy for Action on Climate Change, adopted by the 195 Member States in November at the General Conference.

The Trump administration has made multiple decisions to end or reverse Obama-era policies focused on combatting climate change.

"You may withdraw", says Emanuel, referring to Trump pulling out of the Paris Agreement. "We lead respectively where there is no consensus or directive out of our national governments".

Cities from across the US -including New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington-have all said they will commit to lowering their carbon footprint and take action on their own without President Trump.
