Travel disruption as Storm Caroline brings gales and snow showers

"The UK Met Office have named it Storm Caroline".

Northern England is also expecting snow on Sunday evening.

Today will be the last day of mild conditions before a cold snap forecast to last until Christmas grips the UK.

The weather service has upgraded its warning to amber in northern parts of Scotland, instructing residents to be prepared to deal with extreme conditions.

"1cm to 5cm of snow is widely expected, with up to 10cm in places".

A yellow "be aware" warning is in force for the southern half of Scotland and parts of the north of Northern Ireland between 6am and 6pm as well.

Conditions will start to turn wet and blustery, especially across the north and north west of the United Kingdom, before gales hit on Thursday.

Coastal routes, seafronts and coastal communities are likely to be affected by spray or large waves.

"Overnight, the main feature will be the increase in wind as Caroline starts to come in towards the end of the night".

It follows the UK Met Office naming an Atlantic storm which is set to hit Thursday Storm Caroline.

Sunday's weather warning is in force from 04.00 on Sunday until 23:55.

CNR International said it would remove all of the 159 staff on Ninian South, about 240 miles from Aberdeen, from the structure as a precaution. "There is a good chance that power cuts may also occur".

Friday will also be cold, Met Éireann said, with sunshine and scattered rain, hail, sleet and snow showers, and temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in gusty northwesterly winds.

Freezing temperatures are then forecast for parts of Britain on Friday, with a yellow snow and ice warning in place for Scotland, Northern Ireland, western England and Wales.

"During winter weather which brings snow showers, it is not uncommon for snow amounts to vary considerably across short distances", said the Chief Forecaster.
