Spotify has been hit with a $1.6 billion lawsuit

Spotify Slapped with $1.6 Billion Lawsuit from Wixen Music Publishing

In return, Spotify questioned Wixen's standing in the case, countering that while the publisher has the rights to administer these songs, their deals did not explicitly include the right to litigate on behalf of the songwriters. The lawsuit seeks at least $1.6 billion in damages and injunctive relief. Wixen Music Publishing filed court documents late previous year suing Spotify, one of the leaders in music streaming, for a whopping $1.6 billion United States dollars.

Spotify is facing a $1.6 billion lawsuit from Wixen Music Publishing, the publisher that represents artists like Tom Petty, Missy Elliot, Stevie Nicks and Neil Young, The Hollywood Reporter first reported.

The lawsuit comes after the Sweden-based music-streaming service agreed in May to pay more than $43 million to settle a proposed class-action lawsuit brought against it by songwriters who accused the company of not licensing or paying them for use of their music.

Additionally, Spotify is now engaged in another lawsuit with Bob Gaudio from Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, who alleges that Spotify has failed to comply with a section of the U.S. Copyright Act by failing to send "notice of intention" to reproduce their music online.

Spotify is hitting back by questioning whether or not Wixen is actually authorized by those artists to take these aggressive actions.

In that settlement, Spotify admitted to failing to obtain necessary statutory licenses to reproduce and/or distribute musical compositions on its platform, the lawsuit says. Wixen is an independent music publisher that was formed in 1978 by Randall Wixen.
