'Jeopardy!' on hiatus while Alex Trebek recovers from brain surgery

Jeopardy! Power Players Week

The production of long-running TV game show Jeopardy! will be on hiatus after its host Alex Trebek is recovering from surgery.

Trebek said he received treatment for a subdural hematoma, which means he had blood clots on his brain, due to a fall he endured about two months ago.

No timetable for when he'll be back on the air.

"Some of you may have heard by now that during the holiday break I had a slight medical problem", Trebek said in a video posted on Twitter.

He continued saying that two days after surgery, he was able to return home and his "prognosis is excellent".

Trebek's absence isn't expected to affect the show much, since episodes are taped months in advance.

Jeopardy! debuted as a daytime show in 1964, and ran until 1975.

However, the upcoming College Championship, which was scheduled for taping now, will now be filmed in March.

But over the years there have been a few medical scares that have made headlines, including a 2012 heart attack and the time he snapped his Achilles tendon while chasing a burglar in his hotel room in 2011.

The 77-year-old Canadian has become an American institution in the decades since he started hosting "Jeopardy" in 1984, beloved for the way he calmly delivers tough trivia to the cognoscenti that make up the show's contestants.
