Twitter asserts that it won't ban Trump because he's a world leader

Some Twitter users have called, repeatedly, for the social network to block President Donald Trump's account - but a new statement from Twitter essentially says that is not going to happen.

The protest came after Trump kicked off the new year with a Level 5 tweetstorm, taking shots at everything from Iran's government to the "Fake News Media", but on Tuesday night the Tweeter-In-Chief made a decision to brag that his "nuclear button" is larger and more powerful than North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un's.

President Trump's provocative tweet aimed at North Korean leader Kim Jung Un triggered questions to the White House on Wednesday about his fitness for office.

In a statement "World Leaders on Twitter", the platform said it would not remove world leaders or censor their tweets because of their "outsized impact" on society.

The announcement came just days after a tweet from President Donald Trump hinting at the use of USA nuclear weapons sparked criticism that the social network was allowing threats of violence.

A company spokeswoman had no immediate comment, beyond emails that were sent to those who complained that Trump's tweet violated terms of service in that it was a violent threat - this time of nuclear annihilation.

In response, Twitter has said that none of the President's tweets are in violation of company rules.

"North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the 'Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.' Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!" The company also introduced new policies last month that specifically exempted "military or government" groups from its policies prohibiting accounts that "use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes".

The statement left open the possibility however that Twitter could remove specific tweets from political leaders which violate its policies.

The company said Friday that it reviews all tweets, including those of world leaders.

"It's a running joke [in the West Wing] that nuclear war could start from the private residence during Fox [News] primetime", one senior Trump aide told The Daily Beast.
