Iran Accuses US of 'Grotesque' Meddling Through Social Media

Vasily Nebenzya speaks to Nikki Haley before a Security Council meeting on Iran

(CNN) US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Sunday touted a quarter billion dollar cut to the UN's annual budget, capping off a contentious year between the Trump administration and the global body.

Ryabkov said earlier on Thursday that the United States should not interfere in Iran's domestic affairs, and that Moscow remained committed to the 2015 worldwide deal to curtail Tehran's nuclear program, which US President Donald Trump has challenged. These protests were followed on Saturday and Wednesday by large demonstrations in support of the government. "The Iranian regime is now on notice: the world will be watching what you do".

Haley said that "in the end, the Iranian people will determine their own destiny", and she reiterated U.S. support for the protesters.

"We must maintain a robust dialogue with Iran to ensure it doesn't further pose a risk stoking regional stability", he said.

ReutersThe US has faced criticism for bringing the protests in Iran to the floor of the UN.

United States president Donald Trump has voiced encouragement for anti-government demonstrations which broke out in Iran. She also called government of Iran to "stop censoring the voice of the people, and to restore the access to the Internet".

Ben Evansky reports for Fox News on the United Nations and global affairs. "The people of Iran are crying out for freedom".

More than 20 people were killed in the demonstrations, including at least one police officer, while more than a thousand others were detained by authorities. Now pro-government protests are taking their place, and on Thursday, regime supporters marched through parts of the country for a second day in a row.

"The President and I call on leaders of freedom-loving nations across the world to condemn Iran's unelected dictators and defend the Iranian people's unalienable right to chart their own future and determine their own destiny".

The British envoy was addressing the United Nations Security Council session which had been held at the request of the United States to discuss recent unrests in some parts of Iran.

Trump's repeated tweets backing protesters during Iran's unrest were rebuffed by marchers on Friday.

"We don't want to get involved in destabilizing Iran or any other country", he said.

United States president Donald Trump and members of his administration have praised the anti-government demonstrators as people standing up to a repressive and corrupt regime that is trying to silence them.

But the Europeans - who negotiated the nuclear agreement along with the United States, Russia and China - have reacted more cautiously by expressing support for the protesters without antagonizing the government with strident condemnation.

"Despite many attempts to distort the essence of what is happening, I am sure that our neighbor, the state that is friendly to us, will be able to overcome the current difficulties and come out of the current period as a stronger country and a partner that is reliable in solving various problems", including those relarted to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Ryabkov said, according to the state-run TASS news agency.
