YouTube will downgrade discoverability of channels posting offensive content

YouTube suspends ads on Logan Paul’s channel

YouTube announced Friday that they were temporarily suspending advertising on Logan Paul's channel. Logan Paul posted a video where he uses a taser on two dead rats a couple of times and attempted to perform CPR on a fish that was suffering on dry land... all in the same video.

In December, he was criticised for uploading a video of a dead body recorded in Japan's so-called suicide forest. This could have a major impact on Paul, given that it is estimated that the YouTuber earns over $1 million in ad revenue every month. YouTube has spent most of 2017 and all of 2018, at this point, attempting to redress the behavior of figures like Pewdiepie, the site's biggest star before coming under fire for anti-Semitic and racist statements on his channels, among other scandals. Understandably, the video caused an outcry, and Paul took several weeks off after giving an abrupt apology.

Google did not immediately respond to a Daily News request for comment.

YouTube also cited an article in the United Kingdom newspaper The Sun about a reported tweet from Paul saying he would swallow one Tide Pod for every retweet the post received. All three of these stem from content posted on February 5, and the video containing the freaky fish/rat incident remains available. In response to the outrage, YouTube cut the influencer from all of its originals projects that were now in development, put an age requirement on his channel, and removed him from its Google's premium advertising program.

The company also said Paul will not be featured on season 4 of the original YouTube series, "Foursome" and that "his new Originals are on hold".

The company then suspended Paul's content deals with YouTube's subscription service, YouTube Red. Regardless, YouTube's move against Paul is certainly an interesting one, and likely sets precedent for other content creators who rely on shock value to promote their channels.

'How many chances does Logan Paul get?' reads a PETA statement.

"As you guys know, YouTube cut my adsense in half", he says in the video, before YouTube pulled all his ad revenue, "so I am gonna need you guys to buy all my merch, Marverick merch, of course, so I don't lose my house". YouTube is now vetting the program more closely and giving advertisers full reports on where ads appear.

It's clear that Paul is far from a good role model, and many viewers think so, so it's unclear why YouTube made a decision to keep him on after demonetizing his videos.
