Trump Should Treat Women 'With More Respect', Say Bill and Melinda Gates

Bill Gates

The Gates made the statement in their annual letter answering the "10 toughest questions" they had received.

"There have been some interesting tip-offs about where they're heading or their perspectives on things", said David Callahan, the founder and editor of Inside Philanthropy, a news site about charitable giving.

They open the letter by noting that while the majority of headlines focus on the negative, they see a world that's getting better, citing that the number of children who die every year has been cut in half since 1990 and extreme poverty has declined by almost half in just 20 years. "Even if we measured everything the government did only by how much it helped American citizens, global engagement would still be a smart investment".

The Gates' added that is one reason why they started their philanthropic foundation, which aims to steer funding toward ideas and programs that can alleviate poverty and inequality around the world.

"In their 10th annual letter, Bill and Melinda Gates address 'The 10 Toughest Questions We Get" for the Gates Foundation.

"I wish our president would treat people, and especially women, with more respect when he speaks and tweets", she writes. "We've learned over time to give each other feedback at home about times in the office when we didn't meet that goal", Melinda said. As presumed, some of the questions on the list come from the Gates Foundation's most staunch critics looking for real commentary on how and why Bill and Meldina believe they can impart their influence, financial or celebrity related, in areas, they are relatively nascent at. That reflects the foundation's conviction that it can save more lives in poorer countries, where investments in simple solutions like vaccines can have big payoffs. Residents of an apartment complex pointed out mold growing on the walls and explained how they hide their children in the bathtub when gunfire breaks out.

"Equality is an important national principle".

That includes queries into the $40 billion foundation's impact on USA education, whether they're imposing their values on other cultures through global giving, and if it's fair that they have so much influence due to their tremendous wealth.

On one level, I think the answer is obviously no.

They've been major supporters of charter schools and also pushed Common Core education standards, teacher evaluation systems that factored in student test scores and a smaller schools model - highly polarizing education policy reforms that didn't dramatically change student outcomes but made the Gateses deeply unpopular in some communities.

"There is nothing good that comes out of that", he said in 2006. The answer may seem counterintuitive, she wrote, but the evidence is clear in historical birth trends from around the world. "They go down", the letter says.

And while the Microsoft co-founder loves to tuck into a good book about social progress (or five), he's also mindful of the criticism or scepticism sometimes directed at the massively wealthy foundation headed up by he and his wife.

Gates said Trump's budget proposal "continues the misguided approach the Administration has taken toward global health and development over the past year".

Wealth opens doors that are closed to most people, Melinda Gates wrote. We've spent thousands of hours learning together, meeting with scientists, educators and world leaders. "Cash-strapped school districts are more likely to divert money and talent toward ideas they think we will fund".
