Trump Shows Willingness To Raise Fuel Taxes

President Trump takes part in a meeting on infrastructure with state and local officials in the State Dining Room of the White House on Monday

"There's a lot of ideas, but the president is willing to engage", he said. The donation announced today in the White House briefing room comes a day after Trump released a plan to rebuild crumbling roads, bridges and ports.

"The president made a living building things, and he realizes that to build things takes money, takes investment", DeFazio said.

"He understands that we've got to figure out the funding levels and where the money's coming from, make sure it's not smoke and mirrors", Shuster said of the president.

The administration unveiled an infrastructure proposal earlier this week. ASCE president Kristina Swallow, a civil engineer and program manager for the city of Las Vegas, says "it's great to know that the leadership of our country recognizes the fact that we have been underspending on infrastructure for decades and that it's hurting our families economically".

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said Tuesday that "everything is on the table" to pay for the president's $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan, which calls for $200 billion in federal funds over 10 years.

"I want a parade like the one in France", Trump said at a January 18 meeting at the Pentagon, according to The Washington Post. More than 30 states have raised their gasoline or other taxes in recent years to try to meet infrastructure needs.

Sen. Tom Carper of DE said Trump told lawmakers in a White House meeting that he would be willing to provide leadership on such an increase.

Congress has transferred almost $140 billion to the Highway Trust Fund since 2008.

Revenue from the federal per-gallon taxes of 18.4 cents on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel has declined as the average fuel economy of a passenger vehicle increased.

But some members of Congress might be willing to embrace the Trump administration's plan, if it's truly supplemental to current infrastructure funding programs, as White House aides say it is meant to be. Tom Carper, a Democrat from DE who attended the meeting and has advocated for gradually increasing the levy.

American Trucking Associations President and CEO Chris Spear applauded Mr. Trump's "big and bold vision for strengthening American infrastructure".
