This Top Apple Supplier Could Lose in Upcoming iPhones

Just like the infamous "ChaiOS" bug that caused iMessage to crash with a single link, this lone Indian Telugu language character is affecting a number of iPhones running iOS 11.2.5.

Opening a message containing the character is enough to crash Apple's system that manages the home screen, called iOS Springboard. If you reopen the app and the character is still there, it will crash the app again, so you'll need to use a different (non-iOS device) to access the messaging app and delete the message including the character. The iPad's iOS notification bar failed to process them, forcing the whole system to stop and reload. In 2015, Apple's devices were plagued by the so-called "Unicode of Death", which caused similar issues when users received a message with a specific combination of Arabic characters. The bug also affects the macOS versions of both Messages and Safari.

The firm has also updated its page for app submission guidelines to reflect this change. As per some reports, the bug also comes into effect when inserting the Telugu character in text editors like TextField, Labels, TextView. Apple's next major software update, iOS 12, is expected to come out this fall.

Italian blog MobileWorld first reported its existence, and The Verge noticed and tested the bug, which consists of partially or fully crashing an iPhone just by sending a message. It has been learned that the tech giant is working on a fix for iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, tvOS 11 versions that have been affected by this problem. Spotted by Mobile World and The Verge, it involves receiving an Indian language character.

Update: Apple said it'll fix this iOS 11 glitch, so prepare for another software update between now and iOS 11.3.

If you're one of the customers that purchased Apple's new thousand-dollar smartphone, then you know that apps can be a bit of a mixed bag.
