U.S. women's cross-country wins gold

Jessica Diggins celebrates after sealing the United States' victory in the women’s cross-country skiing team sprint freestyle event at Pyeongchang 2018

Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall took first place in the women's freestyle team sprint.

As we mentioned in our profile of the U.S. Olympic team, Randall is the only mother on Team USA.

Jessica Diggins (left) and Kikkan Randall celebrate winning their gold medal in the women's cross-country team sprint free final at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

She blew by Nilsson in a blur to capture gold in the team sprint, bringing the United States its first gold medal ever in cross-country skiing.

Sweden took home the silver medal and Norway walked away with the bronze.

As she crossed the line she collapsed in exhaustion as teammate Kikkan Randall tackled her in the snow.

Cross-country skiing medal action at Pyeongchang 2018 is due to resume on Saturday (February 24), when the men's 50km mass start classic event is scheduled.

It was a fitting race for two gritty and strong racers whose lives and careers have always been lived in parallel - from making their debuts in Salt Lake City, to having children within months of each other around two years ago. With about 100 meters to go, she suddenly split off from behind Sweden's Stina Nilsson, the sprint gold medalist, pulled even with her for several meters and then surged unexpectedly ahead.

"I just felt unstoppable", she said. The Norwegian athlete is the most decorated Winter Olympian (14 medals).

Diggins' father, Clay, said he had a feeling this was the day the drought would end. "I feel that it's also special that Kikkan is there, who also started her Olympic [career] in Salt Lake with me".

Four years ago, Randall came into Sochi as the gold medal favorite in the individual sprint - and failed to advance out of the quarterfinals by.05 seconds.

The women of Team USA have long talked about the positive effects of a strong team.

She confirmed that again after the team sprint. Spending months together racing in Europe every year means they're closer than most teams.

Considering how much they each did to build up the sport, it's incredibly appropriate they are the first two American women to wear gold for cross country.

So when it came down to a three-way sprint for the win tonight, the U.S. team knew it was possible for her to pull through.

Koch was the only other American to win a medal in cross-country, taking home silver at the 1976 Innsbruck Games.

Bjoergen, who already had won gold, silver and bronze at the Pyeongchang Games, said she was happy to see the Americans win this one.
