Jeff Sessions to make 'major sanctuary jurisdiction announcement' tomorrow in Sacramento

Jeff Sessions

A second lawprevents state and local law enforcement from giving federal immigration officials information about when they intend to release an undocumented immigrant from their custody.

He is expected to speak to law enforcement officials in the state's capital Wednesday, just hours after the U.S. Justice Department filed suit - the most aggressive move yet in the Trump administration's push to force so-called sanctuary cities and states to cooperate with immigration authorities.

Law enforcement "is in a holding pattern" until the conflict between state and federal law is resolved by both sides, Leveroni said, adding that California agencies don't want to lose federal criminal justice funding.

The Trump Justice Department filed a lawsuit Tuesday night against California, saying three recently-passed state laws were deliberately interfering with federal immigration policies. "We are fighting to make your jobs safer and to help you reduce crime in America".

"I find it hard to believe even in today's America that informing people of their legal rights could be considered illegal", she said.

Sessions has blamed sanctuary city policies for crime and gang violence and announced in July that cities and states could only receive certain grants if they cooperate with immigration agents. The Supreme Court sided with the Obama administration by striking down major provisions of that law in 2012.

President Trump effectively declared war on sanctuary jurisdictions within a week of taking office, signing an executive order stating that such places "have caused immeasurable harm to the American people and to the very fabric of our Republic" and threatening to withhold federal funds from them.

The Justice Department filing says all three laws improperly attempt to regulate federal immigration at the state level.

"At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America", Brown said on Twitter.

Then, in a direct shout-out to the attorney general, Brown wrote, "Jeff, these political stunts may be the norm in Washington, but they don't work here". A key part of that effort involves a crackdown on primarily Democrat-governed cities and states that Sessions claims are "sanctuaries" that protect illegal immigrants from deportation.

The lawsuit names Gov. "Our state officials work in concert with federal officials every day". But what we won't do is stop being focused on public safety.

"It's a bit like a child being sent off to school or into public and being told to behave one way by their mother and another way by their father", McGinness said.

Sessions plans to discuss the lawsuit during a speech he is scheduled to give on Wednesday at a law enforcement conference in Sacramento.

The issue of illegal immigrants has become increasingly heated since Donald Trump became president previous year and signaled that he planned to target a wider swath of people for deportation.

The DOJ suit will also target a law called AB 450 that went into effect January 1 and restricts private employers' ability to cooperate with federal immigration officials, including by requiring a subpoena or warrant to enter workplaces and by notifying workers about reviews of employment documentation.

The legal action will take aim at three state laws passed past year that the Justice Department contends violate a clause in the U.S. Constitution.
