Betsy DeVos can't answer basic education questions

Education Secretary struggles to answer basic questions about education on '60 Minutes' as she fumbles answers on school choice, campus rapes and racism

Stahl: Has that happened in MI? It reveals that over half of third-grade students did not pass the reading test on Michigan's state assessment in 2017.

"And all students means all students", DeVos said.

Lesley Stahl: Have the public schools in MI gotten better?

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos speaks during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), in February at National Harbor, Md. I can't say overall that they have all gotten better.

"The whole state is not doing well", Stahl pushed.

If I was a boxing referee, I would have stopped this exchange about halfway through. "Secretary DeVos has not been able to draw the connection between her beliefs in choice and deregulation".

'I don't think assault weapons carried in schools carried by any school personnel is the appropriate thing, ' she said, asked whether teachers should be allowed to carry assault weapons.

MI also has a high level of school of choice and charter schools, but school tests scores are not improving like they are in Florida, a point indicated by Stahl. When asked if she sees disproportionate institutional racism in schools, DeVos answers that her department is "studying" the problem. There is no doubt about it.

'Have the public schools in MI gotten better?' Stahl asked her during one exchange. "The public schools here are doing worse than they did". At one point, she admitted she hasn't "intentionally" visited underperforming schools.

The White House did not respond to a request for an official comment regarding DeVos' performances, and it wasn't immediately clear what President Donald Trump's reaction was. Or is she just stopping by the successes?

The administration will start working with states to provide "rigorous firearms training" to teachers and other school personnel who volunteer to be armed, said Andrew Bremberg, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Her family's investments have included K12 Inc., a for-profit virtual school company.

The DeVos interview has already sent a message that schools can be less mindful of stark disciplinary disparities. The idea of arming some teachers has been controversial and has drawn sharp opposition from the National Education Association, the country's largest teachers lobby, among other groups. And appears to be voluntarily wearing rose-colored glasses by seeing only the places where everything is going hunky dory.

"Maybe you should", Stahl suggested. DeVos refused to say such a discrepancy is wrong: "Arguably, all of these issues or all of this issue comes down to individual kids".

STAHL: Yeah, but are they the same?

It's easy to give DeVos grief for not being better prepared, but that's not entirely fair.

Stahl also got asked about administration changes to Title IX rules that make it harder for accusers to prove accusations charging sexual assault, the Washington Post noted.

"Did you ever see her?"
