Nepal Plane Crash Survivors Describe Chaos

The US-Bangla Airlines plane crash at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, has raised several questions on safety procedures and how the plane veered off the runway and crashed onto a football pitch.

Kathmandu, Nepal - At least 40 people were killed and 23 injured when a Bangladeshi plane crashed and burst into flames near Kathmandu airport on Monday, in the worst aviation disaster to hit Nepal in years.

Monday's crash was the deadliest since a Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed in 1992, killing all 167 on board.

"All of a sudden the plane shook violently and there was a loud bang", one of the survivors, Basanta Bohora, told the Kathmandu Post daily. "The captain then asked for Runway 20 (from Pashupati Nath area) permission turning his flight to the east from its previous location", one of the officers of TIA said.

Bombardier representatives for the commercial and business aircraft divisions said the company was saddened by the accidents, adding their thoughts were with those impacted and their families.

There seemed to have been misunderstanding between the plane and air traffic control regarding the direction from which the airplane should approach the landing strip. "The tower repeatedly asked if the pilot was ok and the reply was "yes", said Raj Kumar Chetri, the airport's general manager. We were all scared that everything was done in front of our eyes, "said a woman who was on another plane at the same airport".

The US-Bangla plane involved in the crash was a Bombardier Q400 series aircraft. The transcript, which Asif said was accessible on YouTube, reveals confusion over the runway designated for the flight to land.

The government has already formed a six-member probe panel under the coordination of former Director General at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), Yagya Prasad Gautam.

Moments later, the controller comes back on, using a panicked tone rarely heard in such conversations, and tells the pilot, "I say again, turn!"

All 49 people on board were killed on February 12, 2009 when a Colgan Air flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Buffalo Niagara International Airport, stalled and crashed into a house while preparing to land at the airport.

He added after making rounds over Runway 20 landing location, the flight suddenly tried to make a final approach towards Runway 02. Then I saw the plane change direction nearly completely and it was flying straight towards us.
