Saudi threatens to develop nuclear bomb if Iran does

Saudi Minister of Interior Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud with Malaysian counterpart Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

The Kingdom's next leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, said in an interview with CBS that his nation does not necessarily want to acquire nuclear weapons.

During the interview, which is slated to air this coming Sunday, the Crown Prince also said that his country would be compelled to develop its own nuclear capabilities if Iran succeeds in acquiring a nuclear arsenal.

Prince Salman further said, "Many countries around the world and in Europe did not realise how unsafe Hitler was until what happened, happened".

"I don't want to see the same thing happen in the Middle East", Bin Salman added.

This has been at the heart of Western and regional concerns over the nuclear work of Iran, Saudi Arabiaâs arch-rival which enriches uranium domestically.

The upstart Saudi royal likened Iran's supreme leader to Adolf Hitler, warning he could sweep through the Middle East like Germany's Nazis did at the start of World War II. Not owning to any genocidal proclivity (as he must know Hitler's name would invoke), but because of what he views as Khamenei's desire "to expand", he told CBS.

The interview, which is scheduled to air on Sunday, is the first with a Saudi leader for a US television network since 2005.

"Because he (Khamenei) wants to expand".

The 32-year-old crown prince has reportedly used different excuses with to explain his mother's absence to his father who has told close contacts that he misses her and does not know where or how she is. It's not going to be much comfort to have the Saudis as a nuclear counterweight in the region, but at the moment it's about as good as we can hope unless the Iranians give up on nukes altogether. The Crown Prince is expected to ask Trump to tighten containment measures against Iran.

Trump on Tuesday nominated Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo as the next secretary of state.

The prospect of a Middle East nuclear arms race will unnerve European leaders who are urging Donald Trump to retain the Iran nuclear deal which imposed strict curbs on the Iranian nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.

"The United States is determined to leave the nuclear deal, and changes at the State Department were made with that goal in mind - or at least it was one of the reasons", Iran's deputy foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Wednesday.
