Federal Bureau of Investigation arrests suspect near Seattle in DC area suspicious packages case

Fort Belvoir is roughly 23 miles from Washington

An arrest has been made in Washington state in connection to the multiple suspicious packages that were sent to military and government facilities in the Washington, DC, area, according to a law enforcement official.

Howard said the package was "rendered safe, " and no injuries were reported.

The FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service also are working to see whether any other suspicious packages might be moving through the mail to other potential targets in the Washington D.C. area. Officials cautioned that additional packages may have been sent to mail processing facilities in the D.C. area and said they remain on alert.

He said an x-ray indicated what was suspected to be a type of fuse attached.

The FBI is now in possession of the packages and is trying to determine if they were explosive and who sent them.

The FBI is examining all of the packages. It tested positive for black powder and residue.

One of those packages contained liquid in a vial and a circuit board, according to law enforcement officials. The bureau said each package was collected for further analysis. Court documents are expected to give insight into how many packages were mailed and whether or not the devices were actually explosive. Some included letters that one official described as disturbed and rambling.

Authorities took a man into custody Tuesday in relation to a series of mysterious packages that were sent to various government facilities across Washington, D.C. and Virginia.

The current scare comes in the wake of the Austin package bombings that left two people dead and several injured.

"We are tracking the delivery of suspicious packages to multiple military installations in the National Capital Region", said a spokeswoman for the Department of Defense.

It is not yet clear if the packages are all linked to one another.
