Stocks Edge Higher, Adding to Prior-Day Gains

Dow surges 669 clawing back lost ground

The market rebound followed the worst week for US stocks in two years as investors traded last week's jitters for a more optimistic outlook on trade, and an opportunity to buy.

CHINA FACTOR: The fears of worsening trade tensions eased after China's government said it is open to negotiating with Washington.

Despite Nasdaq's rebound, Facebook declined for most of Monday as the social media powerhouse, with more than 2 billion monthly users, reeled from a crisis over data misuse, but climbed to break even for the day. They lost more than 1,400 points last week. The S&P 500's fall of 46 points was a 1.7 percent slide.

US stocks closed sharply lower on Tuesday, erasing earlier gains, as a decline in the broader tech sector brought the major averages down.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 70.29 points, or 2.7 percent, to 2,658.55.

The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX - 22.50) finished 1.5 points, or 7%, higher. Prices dipped ahead of an anticipated rise in USA weekly crude inventories tomorrow. Stocks wavered through much of the morning, recovered somewhat by early afternoon, but then veered sharply lower as investors sold shares in Nvidia, Twitter, Facebook and other technology companies.

USA stocks closed sharply lower on Tuesday, ending a volatility session near the lows of the day as technology and financial stocks saw particular weakness. PG&E gained $1.07, or 2.5 percent, to $43.94. Natural gas rose 7 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $2.69 per 1,000 cubic feet. The Federal Trade Commission on Monday announced it is investigating the company after reports that Cambridge Analytica abused the information of 50 million users. That announcement followed a news report indicating that USA officials have submitted a list of market-opening requests.

Benchmark U.S. crude fell 33 cents to settle at $65.55 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In other energy futures trading, heating oil was little changed at $2.02 a gallon. Silver gained 10 cents to $16.68 an ounce.
