Apple CEO Tim Cook Rips Facebook: 'Privacy Is a Human Right'

Apple CEO Tim Cook had harsh words for Facebook and the recent uproar over how the social network handled user data.

"The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetised our customer - if our customer was our product". "We've elected not to do that". I think it's - privacy to us is a human right.

The Cambridge Analytica data breach is one of the biggest incidents of its kind, where the data of more than 50 million Facebook accounts was collected and shared. "I do think that it is time for a set of people to think deeply about what can be done here".

"At stake is the data security of hundreds of millions of law-abiding people and setting a unsafe precedent that threatens everyone's civil liberties", he continued.

Apple is still a hardware company that makes the bulk of its revenues from devices, while Facebook nearly exclusively relies on advertising to make money, which requires extensive user data to fine-tune targeting. Lawmakers have also floated tougher rules on the company and two Congressional committees have formally invited the Facebook CEO to testify.

Apple's Tim Cook says Facebook is beyond self-regulation.
