Ex-South Korean President Park Geun-hye Jailed 24 Years For Bribery

South Korea's former President Park Geun-hye has been sentenced to 24 years in jail after she was found guilty of abuse of power and coercion.

The ex-president was also fined 18 billion won (US$16.8 million) - which was just a tenth of the amount requested by the prosecution. She was tried separately and sentenced in February to 20 years in prison.

It was reported that "Park had colluded with her long-time friend Choi Soon-sil to solicit bribes from South Korean conglomerates including Samsung and retail giant Lotte in exchange for policy favours".

In addition, Park was found guilty of leaking confidential presidential documents to Choi. It said Park was unaware that the money was in return for helping Samsung complete a merger of group firms that was needed for a smooth leadership succession.

A South Korean judge says former President Park Geun-hye is guilty of abuse of power and coercion. She had boycotted most sessions of the trial in protest at being held in custody. She is the first South Korean president to be removed from office through a court proceeding and the third president to be convicted of a crime.

Experts said the verdict was as expected and was in line with other verdicts in one of the biggest corruption scandals to have hit South Korea. She was indicted the following month. She denied the charges against her and said she would appeal against the verdict.

During her father's 18-year rule, Park Geun-hye served as first lady after her mother was killed in an assassination attempt targeting her father in 1974.

Major General Park Chung-hee, president from 1961-1979 and father of Park Geun-hye, was ultimately assassinated by his spy chief at a party.

In December 2016 Park was impeached by Parliament over a massive corruption scandal.

In a presidential by-election triggered by Park's early exit, Moon won an easy victory against wounded conservatives.

Millions of South Koreans took to the streets past year demanding the end of Park's government, and they succeeded in having her impeached.

She exploited her position not just for financial gain, but also to build the equestrian career of her daughter, who was admitted to Ewha and selected to represent South Korea in the 2014 Asian Games.

But her relations with the Choi family have long haunted her political career.

Last month former leader Lee Myung-bak was charged with corruption over allegations he took bribes while in office.

Park was removed from office early past year following months of massive rallies that saw millions take to the nation's streets calling for her ouster.

More than 200 supporters gathered outside the court, holding national flags and signs calling for an end to political revenge against Park.
