Kulgam Gunfight: Forces kill Anantnag youth, toll 4

A police spokesperson confirmed early morning that a cordon and search operation was launched in Kulgam after input of militant presence in the Khudwani area.

According to Police in the said encounter three civilians identified as Sarjeel Sheikh of Khudwani, Bilal Ahmad Tantray of Frisal and Faisal Ilahi of Melhoora Shopian who were injured in the cross fire have also succumbed to their injuries.

In occupied Kashmir, the Joint Resistance Leadership has called for shutdown and protests, tomorrow, against the killing of civilians by the Indian forces in Kulgam district, today.

Police issued a statement saying the civilian deaths took place as a result of crossfire between the militants and security forces.

A new generation of Kashmiri rebels, especially in the southern parts of the disputed region, has revived the militancy and challenged New Delhi's rule with guns and effective use of social media. Four men were killed and at least 40 civilians injured, officials said. One house was completely razed and two others caught fire during the operation, reports said. Five civilians were also killed in subsequent clashes with government forces. Informed sources said over 40 civilians were injured in street clashes. They said the militants were able to escape.

ANI reported that owing to the ongoing encounter, mobile internet services were suspended in Kulgam and Anantnag districts of South Kashmir.

Student protests rocked Kashmir University in Srinagar, the Islamic University of Science and Technology in Awantipora in south Kashmir and Degree College in Bandipora in north Kashmir.

The latest civilian killings have again pushed Kashmir on the edge with separatists calling for a strike on Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Chairman of Hurriyat (M), called the killings an attempt to "wipe out" Kashmiris and urged the global community and the United Nations to "step in".
