Volkswagen supervisory board will elect new CEO soon

Herbert Diess chief of the Volkswagen brand was named to take over as CEO of the company as a whole

"Diess will hold both positions, CEO of the company and the VW brand", one of the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

Dieselgate has cost VW more than 25 billion euros ($31 billion) in buybacks, fines and compensation, and the carmaker remains mired in legal woes at home and overseas.

Diess has a reputation for clashing with unions over cost-cutting measures, according to the BBC. He then took charge of development, but was ultimately passed over for the CEO job, when the Munich-based company picked Harald Krueger in December 2014.

Under his leadership, VW Group made painful cuts to costs, invested in electrification and self-driving technologies, and managed to boost sales-all while dealing with the fallout of the emission cheating scandal that has cost the company more than $30 billion so far.

"In a phase of profound upheaval in the automotive industry, it is vital for Volkswagen to pick up speed and make an unmistakable mark in e-mobility, the digitalization of the automobile and transportation as well as new mobility services", the new CEO added.

Tensions flared in recent weeks between Mr Mueller and Lower Saxony's leadership, which is represented on the supervisory board.

The carmaker on Thursday said it will create six new business areas and a special portfolio for China, its largest market, and split its brands into three new vehicle groups with categories for value, premium and super-premium nameplates. The potential reshuffle has echoes of previous attempts to lend shape to the VW behemoth.

Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch is in talks about changing the structure with fellow supervisory board members and members of the management board, Volkswagen said. "Diess has proven to be someone who can get things done, so he's the right person to try and execute these changes".

Diess's appointment comes two days after a company statement that was as surprising as it was cryptic, saying that Mueller had agreed "in principle" to contribute to a management change, without elaborating or mentioning his chosen successor by name.

A Volkswagen spokesman declined to comment. As VW emerged from the diesel scandal, the company began reviewing its future structure, and how to streamline the still-Byzantine conglomerate, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations aren't public.
