Lots of reaction about what James Comey is saying

In his prime-time interview with ABC News and in his book, "A Higher Loyalty", the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director unloads on the president as "morally unfit" for office as he plows into a laundry list of political flashpoints from the 2016 election campaign and the early months of the Trump administration.

Yet Comey, who was sacked by Trump last spring while investigating Russia's role in the election that put Trump in the White House, says it's unlikely Trump has been compromised by Russian Federation.

Trump tweeted Monday that Comey and his former deputy Andrew McCabe - both fired from their jobs - "committed many crimes" during their tenures.

"Our President must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country", Comey told ABC's chief anchor, George Stephanopoulos, on the programme 20/20.

Comey is embarking on a public rollout of his book, "A Higher Loyalty", which comes out Tuesday.

While Trump's alleged behavior is hardly surprising to anyone who has, well, heard him speak or read a single "Presidential" Tweet, it's truly jaw-dropping to hear some of Comey's unbridled evaluations.

Almost 7 in 10 Americans support tougher US sanctions against Russian Federation, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll that also finds roughly half the public saying President Donald Trump has done "too little" to criticize Russian Federation for alleged violations of worldwide law.

While many of Trump's critics believe that the proper remedy for his perceived transgressions is impeachment, Comey insisted that would just "let the American people off the hook".

On the face of it then, Comey's book should pose quite a threat to the reputation of a President still embroiled in the Russian Federation investigation, and scandals involving women allegedly paid off to keep quiet about affairs.

Referring to what Trump called a premature Clinton exoneration, Comey said that after nine or 10 months he had a "clear picture" of the investigation into Clinton's email practices and it's common to draft statements before a probe is complete. The polls swung considerably against Hillary Clinton after Comey's October 28 announcement, and didn't recover when he declared two days before the election that the investigation hadn't actually turned up anything incriminating about her.

Then, when asked about Trump's relationship with Putin, he said, "I don't know what's behind that. And bad things happen in forest fires", Comey said. "My loyalty's supposed to be to the American people and to the institution", Comey said in the interview.

In his book, Comey takes direct aim at Trump's appearance, a particularly sensitive topic for the president. One of those viewers may well have been President Trump. After facing widespread backlash at the time, Trump apologized for comments he made on the recording - in which he bragged about sexually assaulting women and "grabbing them by the p-y" - but went on to repeatedly dismiss them as "locker room talk".

"I never asked Comey for Personal Loyalty".

But instead of defending his own actions in a "Good Morning America" interview, he jabbed Trump for appointing himself judge, jury and executioner.

To Comey, Trump is everything a president shouldn't be. In interviews, he expounds on its pages by comparing Trump's administration to a mob family, calling his presence a forest fire and pointing to possible obstruction of justice.
