Israeli army kills one, wounds hundreds during latest round of Gaza protests

Israeli troops killed a Palestinian and hundreds of others were hurt on Friday, Palestinian medical workers said, bringing to 44 the number killed during a six-week protest at the Gaza-Israel border.

One paper, however, al-Hayat al-Jadida, said two Palestinians have died in reference to the one in killed in Gaza and a second one who was hit by an Israeli settlers' bus near Hebron few days ago and died at hospital on Friday.

The protests also took place at the contact points in different cities, including the northern entrance of Bethlehem and Ramallah.

The border rallies will culminate on May 15 (next Tuesday), which will mark the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment - an event Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" or "The Catastrophe".

Most of the deaths have resulted from the Israeli army firing upon Palestinians who approach the border fence.

A Palestinian man uses a slingshot during a protest demanding the right to return to their historic homeland in what is now Israel, at the Israel-Gaza border, east of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, on May 4, 2018.

Israel says, however, that the terror group uses the protests as a cover for attacks at the border and attempts to breach it.

The latest bloody attack by Israel came only a few days after President Donald Trump announced that the United States was pulling out of the Iran nuclear accord and would enforce punishing economic sanctions against Iran.

As in previous weeks, thousands flocked to five tent camps near the border - some 15,000 people, according to the Israeli military.

Israel has said it will prevent any border breach and has stuck to its open-fire policies, such as targeting "main instigators" and those approaching the fence, despite growing global criticism.

A report by the aid charity Save the Children, published on Friday, said that during the protests, at least 250 Gazan children had been hit with live bullets, among almost 700 children injured overall. The protests are also meant to call attention to Gaza unemployment.

"Israel is a terrorist state, and people supporting it could be considered terrorist sympathisers under the anti-terrorism laws" said Ms Morse.

Friday's protest comes just three days ahead of what the Hamas leader of Gaza says will be a march by tens of thousands who could burst through the border fence into Israel. It's located in the residential neighborhood of Arnona - in part on no man's land between East and West Jerusalem - but it's not a fortress, like the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, and it's not a handsome old Ottoman-era building like the current U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem, which is located closer to the Old City and primarily deals with the Palestinians.

Palestinians are seeking the right to return to homes from which they were displaced after the 1948 founding of Israel.
