Oklahoma's Governor Signs First Anti-LGBTQ Law Of 2018

Mary Fallin

A new "faith-based" adoption law signed by Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin on Friday is raising red flags for LGBTQ groups.

"Oklahoma is a state that respects the Second Modification".

Toby Jenkins, executive director of Oklahomans for Equality, called SB 1140 "reprehensible". "This is abhorrent and unacceptable".

"Granting agencies a license to discriminate hurts all children waiting for a forever home by reducing the pool of potential parents, allowing taxpayer-funded providers to refuse to place children with close relatives who happen to be LGBTQ and permitting discrimination against potential parents of another faith", he continued.

South Dakota, Michigan, Alabama, and Texas already have similar legislation. "Rather than focusing on empowering families or uniting children with loving parents, Governor Fallin and Oklahoma Republicans want to strip qualified potential parents of their ability to provide for a child in need".

Several law enforcement agencies and members of the business, education and health care communities had come out in opposition to the bill, contending it could endanger lives.

"It does not ban same-sex adoption or foster care in Oklahoma", she writes.

The best interests of the child is less important than the religious beliefs of social workers now in Oklahoma.

"The bill will help continue Oklahoma's successful placement of children with a broad array of loving families", she said in the release.

"To the extent allowed by federal law, no private child placing agency shall be required to perform, assist, counsel, recommend, consent to, refer, or participate in any placement of a child for foster care or adoption when the proposed placement would violate the agency's written religious or moral convictions or policies".

The pair added that they were "grateful for Gov. Fallin's support of religious liberty". It handed the state's Senate on Might 2 in a 33-9 vote. With this action, Oklahoma has the negative distinction of being the only state [s] to sign an anti-LGBTQ bill into law this year. More than two-thirds of Americans (68 percent) claimed in a September 2017 survey that placement agencies which receive taxpayer dollars should not be permitted to turn away LGBTQ couples if they cite faith-based objections.

This is the first new anti-LGBTQ law in the United States in 2018. "Make no mistake, this temporary setback will be rectified when Oklahoma residents elect a new, and genuinely pro-Second Amendment governor", Cox said in a statement.

"Plain and simple, Governor Fallin and Oklahoma Republicans are discriminating against LGBTQ parents", says DNC LGBTQ media director Lucas Acosta in a statement.
