USA to help N Korea's economy if it abandons nuclear weapons

We are closing out a dramatic week for diplomacy in Asia.

Three American men who had been held by North Korea touched USA soil once again early Thursday, where they were met by President Trump, who has hailed his diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for winning their freedom.

"I think this will be a very big success", Trump said as three freed detainees from North Korea arrived back on us soil yesterday.

The United States and North Korea are technically still at war-a stop-gap armistice ended the brutal three-year Korean war in 1953 and around 30,000 American troops remain in neighboring South Korea, which the USA supported in the conflict.

Mr Pompeo did not mention other adversaries by name, but Mr Pompeo and others have often noted the USA played a major role in rebuilding Japan and the European axis powers in the wake of the Second World War.

MICHELE KELEMEN, BYLINE: Hi there.

The three arrived shortly after an official plane carrying Secretary of State Mike Pompeo - who negotiated the release - touched down. Did he talk today about that relationship? And he used words like warm and substantive, which was a bit surprising coming from this, you know, tough-talking former congressman and Central Intelligence Agency director.

In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearization" has, for years, been a byword for USA troop withdrawals from South Korea and an excuse for stalling. And he points to North Korea's turnabout from a year ago, when it launched more nuclear tests than at any point in its history, to pausing the program. "I think there's a complete agreement about what the ultimate objectives are", he said. But he says Trump deserves credit for bringing Kim to the negotiating table.

The two leaders, who had previously exchanged insults and threats, made the announcement after landmark talks between North and South Korea in April.

Kang and Pompeo will share their assessments of recent progress on the Korean Peninsula ahead of a summit between Moon and Trump set for May 22, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Friday, and engage in in-depth discussions on how the two countries can work together for the "success of the U.S". The U.S. has nearly 30,000 soldiers stationed in the country. "So let's take a look at where these bad actions are coming from".

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha stressed that sanctions against Pyongyang would not be lifted until it had taken concrete steps to denuclearise.

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence were also on hand to welcome the three men home.

Over the past year, Kim and Trump have also added a personal touch to a half-century of worldwide enmity, swapping insults and both openly threatening devastating direct military action. "I hope Mr. Trump will make a breakthrough to achieve our goals". What is each side looking for in the run-up to those talks?

But he stressed that this would require a "robust verification" programme by the United States and other nations. He calls it a big undertaking.

Trump said he will not disclose whether he will have any personal conversations with Kim as they prepare for their historic summit in the coming weeks. "And President Moon of South Korea was very, very happy to hear it".

"Even though we were still on North Korea soil, they were under the protection of the United States of America", she said.
