Salmonella outbreak sickens 35 in nine states

Six in Pennsylvania sick from shell egg salmonella outbreak

A salmonella outbreak that led to the multi-state recall in April of more than 200 million eggs has worsened in recent weeks, with the number of people sickened by the bacteria rising to nearly three dozen.

In 2010, a salmonella outbreak sickened hundreds and led to the recall of half a billion eggs.

The eggs were sold in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

In fact, the CDC reported that eight people in Virginia had been sickened as of May 9.

At least 35 people have been infected with a salmonella outbreak tied to the recall of more than 206 million eggs, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports.

Consumers, restaurants and retailers are still advised not to eat, serve or sell recalled eggs produced by Rose Acre Farms' Hyde County farm. The recalled eggs were sold under brand names such as Great Value, Country Daybreak and Crystal Farms. "For Publix and Sunups egg cartons", the CDC says to check for "plant number P-1359D and Julian date 048A or 049A with Best By dates of April 02 and April 03". This brought the number of people sickened by the salmonella outbreak to 35 across nine states. In response, the government prohibited the company from selling eggs from three IN farms where the contaminated eggs originated and required expensive cleanups that threatened to put the company out of business. Initially, 22 people were sickened. Authorities said the DeCosters' company, Quality Egg, sold eggs contaminated with Salmonella enteriditis to several states and bribed an inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in an attempt to sell eggs that were "red tagged" for failing to meet minimum industry standards. No deaths have been reported, according to the CDC.

Anyone who has had any of the recalled eggs in their homes or restaurants should take intervention action even if no one is known to have become sick after eating them.

Salmonella braenderup is a bacteria that can be found in raw foods and causes symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever, usually about 12 to 72 hours after infection, though the illness can sometimes take weeks to develop.
