Cyclone Mekunu Leaves 6 Dead, 30 Missing in Oman, Yemen

Cyclone tears through Yemeni island Socotra

Three of 11 people who have died so far after Cyclone Mekuna struck Oman and Yemen have been identified as Indians. The search operation is still underway for the rest of the sailors. Large areas of Dhofar and al-Wusta provinces were flooded due to which people living near both the areas had to be moved to safety, BBC reported.

It should be noted that after blockade of Qatar, his Arab neighbours the port of Salalah has become a transit point through which the besieged Emirate deliver food, so indirectly the cyclone hooked and Qatar. However, Mekunu was downgraded to category 1 after losing some of its strength.

India's meteorological department described the cyclone as "extremely severe", with sustained winds of about 110mph. The city's port remains closed.

Oman police earlier reported that the man died after floods swept him away with his vehicle near Salalah, Oman's second-largest city, while the girl died when a gust of wind smashed her into a wall. Three Asians who were wounded by the cyclone were rescued.

The labour ministry declared a three-day holiday for companies and establishments in the private sector, state news agency ONA reported on Sunday.

Around 1,000 families on Socotra, with a population of around 60,000, were evacuated after their homes were damaged.

Saudi teams on the island managed to open the main road between the island's capital and its airport, he said.

The Yemeni high relief agency met with worldwide humanitarian organizations in Aden late Thursday to discuss the situation, the country's Saba news agency reported.

The directorate general of meteorology in Oman said the cyclone had gone inland and was heading northwest into Saudi Arabia, but that heavy rains would likely continue today.
