Pakistan make England suffer at Lord's

Sarfraz could be suspended if Pakistan commit another over-rate offence

England began their Test summer with a nine-wicket defeat early on day four against Pakistan after finding themselves unable to sustain the previous evening's brief fightback at Lord's.

It would be England's only wicket as Pakistan knocked off the required runs easily - Haris Sohail (39no) taking a particular liking to Bess' bowling, with the Somerset off-spinner plundered for 29 runs in 3.4 overs - to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

Jos Buttler and Dominic Bess fought a determined rearguard action as England avoided an innings defeat by Pakistan in the first Test at Lord's on Saturday.

It was the 10th time in a row that Root has failed to convert a Test fifty into a century and his dismissal ended England's realistic hopes of winning the match.

Joe Root, the England captain, opted to bat first in the opening match of this two-Test series despite the fact that both sides had concerns over the reliability of their respective top orders.

Their efforts at Lord's followed seven winless Tests in Australia and New Zealand where England lost their first five wickets for fewer than 150 runs on six occasions, including an embarrassing 58 all out in Auckland.

Rewind to day one and Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed's words were that he "wanted to bowl first".

"He's told us to pitch it up to take wickets in England", explained Sarfraz.

"If we bat well and get something near 250 or 300", he said, "it would be a closer game on that surface".

Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, Vaughan added: 'I got too funky with my fields and it was a lesson to me that in English conditions you can keep it simple, very rarely do you have to think outside the box.

"If you look at the England team they are very experienced but I am proud of my players".

But eight balls into Sunday's play and having added only one more run, Buttler was lbw to Mohammad Abbas for 67.

Buttler, who closed on 66 not out, shared an unbroken partnership of 125 with debutant Dom Bess.

The tourists took the new ball as soon as it became available and Mohammad Amir (4-36) used it to good effect, a length ball drawing a thin edge from Mark Wood, who was taken by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed to depart for just four runs.

And Amir put England out of their misery in emphatic fashion by crashing a full delivery into the off stump of Bess (57), before Imam and Sohail briskly took care of business prior to lunch.

It took Pakistan just 12.4 overs to reach their victory target, with Sohail hitting a six and a four against 20-year-old off-spinner Bess, who went wicketless on debut, as Pakistan sealed their to fifth win in a Test at Lord's in style.
