Apple just debuted a really, really useful app for design

WWDC 2018 attendees line up outside the San Jose Mc Enery Convention Center

For example: A new AR app called Measure lets users gauge the size of objects in the real world-like the suitcase that Apple exec Craig Federighi measured on stage using the app.

The new features were announced at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose amounted to focusing on keeping its base of 1.3 billion users satisfied with their devices and catching up with some competitors.

The new "Screen Time" feature creates detailed daily and weekly Activity Reports that show the total time a person spends in each app they use, their usage across categories of apps, how many notifications they receive and how often they pick up their iPhone or iPad.

Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies, said the flexibility of Apple's system set it apart from others designed only for parental monitoring, offering the ability for teens and adults to impose their own limits.

Parents will find the new features inside the Screen Time section in the Settings section of their iOS devices. Last month, Google unveiled a "digital well-being" initiative at its I/O developers' conference, including new features for Android smartphones that make it easier to activate no-distraction modes and get feedback about excessive app use.

These new FaceTime features work on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The feature also allows parents to restrict apps or limit time spent in specific apps.

Also arriving on iOS 12 for iPad this year is iPhone's proprietary Voice Memo utility, which will allow Apple tablet users to create voice memos just like on iPhone.

At WWDC 2018, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced iOS 12, which is expected to roll out later this year. Federighi also claimed that the keyboard will appear up to 50% faster, and the camera app will open up to 70% faster when you slide from the bottom right of the lock screen.

Apple Books: iBooks is gone for a new Apple Books branding, a new store for books, and more.

Apple says Safari will prevent share buttons and widgets on websites from tracking users without their permission.

This year, analysts think Apple will focus on incremental improvements to make its software more reliable - and be less disruptive in our lives.

The report in NYT claims that under the deal "Facebook allowed the device companies access to the data of users' friends without their explicit consent", and this was done even after the company had claimed it would not share information with outsiders.

Tigers, koalas, and T-rexes, oh my!

Recent scrutiny over privacy concerns were also addressed, with Mr Federighi discussing updates to the macOS software which powers its laptops.

Meanwhile, the company is enabling group video conferencing with up to 32 people through FaceTime.

Comment fields and like and share buttons are now turned off by default in Safari. Only then, would users be able to force-quit apps, by either swiping up or tapping a small minus icon at the top left corner of the app.

Apple Watch users will have more workout options, such as activity competitions and automatic workout detection, and new watchface designs.
