Kim Jong-un impersonator questioned on arrival in Singapore ahead of summit

Affairs

A Kim Jong Un lookalike said he was detained and questioned upon his arrival in Singapore on Friday, days before a summit between the North Korean leader and President Donald Trump.

This follows after General Kim Yong-chol, a close aide of the North Korean leader, hand-delivered a letter from Kim to the US President.

The announcement came a day after the White House revealed that the historic June 12 meeting between the USA and North Korean leaders will take place in a luxury hotel on Sentosa.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday evening that Trump will depart the G-7 summit mid-morning on Saturday after a session on women's empowerment.

Pompeo said he was confident the president would be fully prepared and dismissed reports of division inside Trump's foreign policy team over the decision to embrace the meeting with Kim.

Macron was biting in his criticism of Trump, saying that the other six leading industrialized countries at the summit could get along there without the U.S.

Trump goes to Singapore confident in his deal-making skills based on his career as a NY real estate developer, which made him a billionaire.

"The US has been clear, time and time again, that complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula is the only outcome that we will find acceptable", Pompeo said. "The president recognizes that North Korea has great potential and he looks forward to a day when sanctions on the DPRK can begin to be removed".

However, that can not happen until the Pyongyang completely and verifiably eliminates its weapons of mass destruction programs, he reiterated.

"Until we achieve our goals, the measures that the world, alongside the U.S. has put on the regime will remain".

He said: "I did it once before".

Trump is seeking to get North Korea to agree to denuclearize but acknowledged that is not likely to happen immediately.

"These programmes threaten our homeland, our allies and partners, and the broader non-proliferation regime".

Trump said it's possible they will use next week's meeting to sign an agreement to end the conflict. "It has supporting infrastructure that is also of concern", he said.

Alternatively, Trump has said he could invite Kim to the White House in the future "if it goes well".

"It's why the two leaders are meeting. So this isn't a question of preparation, it's a question of whether or not people want it to happen, and we'll know that very quickly", he said. "But I think I've been prepared for this summit for a long time". We can not take sanctions off.

"You've got to lose some weight too", says the banner for the gym, which shows a photograph of the portly North Korean leader next to a bikini-clad woman.

Trump, who coined the term "maximum pressure" to describe US sanctions against the North, said they would be an indicator for the success or failure of the talks.

"They're a much different country over the last three months". "This has already driven us to a place we'd not been able to achieve".

Aides expect Trump to try to use a personal touch to try build trust with Kim.
