A look back at Trump on North Korea

Trump's comments, made shortly before his departure for Singapore, underline his recent efforts to curb expectations for the summit, the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

Very senior officials from the United States and South Korea have set the tone here, with a huge though indirect assist from Kim Jong Un himself.

The summit has been portrayed as a "get to know you" meeting. South Korean media reported that a Chinese plane went to Pyongyang on Sunday and then to Beijing before heading to Singapore, but a later report said Kim's private plane was on its way to Singapore.

"We'll have to see what happens and we're going to know very soon".

"I think within the first minute, I'll know", Trump said during a free-wheeling press conference before he departed the ongoing G-7 talks for the Singapore summit with Kim.

Asked how he would be able to make such a distinction, he said: "My touch, my feel".

"You know if you're going to like someone in the first five seconds, you ever hear that one?"

"I think I'll know pretty quickly whether or not, in my opinion, something positive will happen", said Trump, who's known for getting physical with leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron.

"It's the formative experience in their life and they're committed to the Australia-Korea relationship in a much deeper way to the more cosmopolitan South Korean who goes skiing in America", Dr Dalton told SBS News.

Kristof says that a diplomat once told him, "the job of leaders at a summit is to pull rabbits out of hats, and the job of the Sherpas preparing for the summit is to stuff the hats with the rabbits - and there isn't really time for that". "People, world leaders that have been right next to him have never met him".

The apparent choice to use the Air China aircraft instead also underlines the strength of the traditional alliance between the socialist neighbours ahead of Mr Kim's historic meeting with Donald Trump.

When he previously appeared at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea with the same Donald Trump lookalike, he was escorted out by security after waving and dancing in front of North Korea´s cheerleaders.

Hundreds of North Korean security experts have no doubt been up nights wondering how to safeguard Kim Jong Un since Trump shocked the world by accepting the North's invitation to meet.

President Trump "is willing to do something big, something bold". But Lee and the other analysts pointed out that Libya hadn't developed nuclear weapons nor intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and North Korea has both.

Still, it's a serious contrast to the days past year when choice insults - Trump's "little rocket man" and Kim's "dotard" - were flying between Washington and Pyongyang during the North's nuclear and missile tests.

In the days leading up to the summit, Mr. Trump predicted a successful trip, even saying that there's potential for Kim to visit the U.S.

The young leader has been swept to centre stage by two new props: his unprecedented nuclear capability and an unconventional U.S. president.

After a flurry of contacts between the two Koreas, South Korean officials suggested to Trump in March that Kim would be willing to meet face-to-face.
