Joint US-Somali Force Attacked by al-Shabab

US soldier killed 4 others wounded in ‘enemy attack’ in Somalia

The military said earlier that four other USA service members were wounded in an extremist attack in Somalia.

Four others were wounded as well during an ambush attack conducted by the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab in the southwestern part of the country.

On Monday, the USA military said it killed 49 members of al-Shabaab in three separate airstrike over a period of 12 days.

A USA special operations soldier has been killed and five military personnel - including four American service members - wounded in an "enemy attack" in southwestern Somalia, according to USA officials.

One of the injured USA service members received sufficient medical care in the field, and the other three were medically evacuated for additional treatment.

Enemy forces used mortars and small-arms fire to attack the US-Somali-Kenyan coalition force. He was the first US casualty in Somalia since the Black Hawk Down incident in 1993.

The recent attack in Somalia comes as a challenging time for Special Operations Forces on the African continent.

President Donald J. Trump issued his condolences to the American soldier who lost his life on Friday.

Friday's incident marked the first time a USA service member has died in action in Somalia since Navy SEAL Kyle Milliken, a senior chief petty officer, was killed in May of past year in a firefight with al-Shabab militants. The group was blamed for a truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and raised concerns about its ability to build larger explosives. Al-Shabaab is an al-Qaeda affiliate operating to overthrow the Somalian government, and it took credit for the attack.

The role of USA troops during the operation was to provide aerial surveillance and to provide other assistance to the coalition group.

The Pentagon is withholding the name of the fallen soldier pending next of kin notification.

The U.S. team was backed up by armed surveillance aircraft, the officials said.

The casualty, coming less than a year after the death in Niger of four Army special operations soldiers, could raise further questions about the presence of U.S. troops on remote missions in Africa.

Al-Shabab, which is fighting to impose Shariah law across Somalia, was pushed out of the capital, Mogadishu, and other major urban cities more than two years ago.
