Trump torpedoes G7 effort to ease trade spat, threatens auto tariffs

Reacting to Trump's tweets, Trudeau's office said: "We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the summit".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau forcefully responded to Donald Trump's trade threats at the Group of Seven summit in Quebec, vowing Saturday that Canada won't be "pushed around" in a confrontation with the U.S.

Trump followed it up with a second post that targeted Canada's auto and dairy industries: "PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak".

US President Donald Trump has left following his brief trip to Canada saying his relationship with the G7 countries is a 10 out of 10, and reports of rifts between the powerful countries are simply "fake news".

In two tweets Thursday evening, Trump accused the Canadian prime minister, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, of "charging the USA massive tariffs" and creating "non-monetary barriers". "With that being said I think we'll probably easily make a deal".

Still, Trudeau also gave an account of his discussions with the US president.

The president's sharp comments came as he is now en route to Singapore for a highly anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, set to be held on Tuesday.

The announcements come as Mr. Trump seeks to make headway on the deep USA trade deficit, saying the country has been taken advantage of for too long, and he is fighting back.

Trump cited progress on reaching an agreement on the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, saying the final outcome would lead either to an improved trade deal or separate pacts with the two USA neighbors.

Trudeau said he would not cave to Trump's trade demands, even if it meant a full-blown trade war.

Just hours before Trump blew up the summit from afar after skipping out on its conclusion, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had proclaimed that all G7 countries, including the United States, had signed off on an "ambitious" communiqué.

Before leaving Washington for the summit, Trump threatened to withdraw from the pact - reversing a statement by his economic adviser earlier this week who said Trump wouldn't walk away.

The US president signaled that he was in no mood to compromise as he met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Trump's statement was made just before he left: the U.S. president has been at odds with the G-7 countries over mounting import duties disagreements.

"We are like the piggy bank that everyone is robbing and that ends", he told a news conference before flying to Singapore for denuclearzation talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He added that he did not blame G7 leaders for the "unfair" trade deals.

Trump has periodically expressed skepticism about the USA intelligence community's conclusion that the Kremlin meddled in the 2016 election that he won, and he has forcefully rejected assertions that Russian Federation was responsible for his victory.

Trump's comments on Saturday came shortly after Trudeau, who was hosting the G-7 meeting in Canada, had projected an image of cooperation. They could also damage Japan and Germany. France will host next year and the United States in 2020.

"There's some movement within Congress now to rein in Trump on trade policy", Gertz said.
