FCC Officially Repeals Obama-Era Net Neutrality Rules

ImageSenator Charles Schumer the minority leader has opposed the repeal of net neutrality

A spokeswoman for the FCC previously directed CNNMoney to a section of the final order for net neutrality, in which the FCC asserts authority to prevent states from pursuing laws inconsistent with the net neutrality repeal.

The Federal Communications Commission's repeal of the net neutrality rules took effect today, leaving broadband providers in most states free to censor sites and slow down apps.

The FCC's repeal of all net neutrality protections has finally gone into effect after six months. "They are not concerned that internet service providers are going to block access to lawful content", he said. If you're a fan of Netflix, for example, net neutrality holds that you should be able to watch its shows without running into impediments your ISP puts up that are created to push you toward a competing service, such as Hulu. This rule also bans ISPs from prioritizing content and services of their affiliates.

Groups taking the FCC's side in the case include CTIA, representing mobile providers AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc.; and NCTA - The Internet & Television Association, representing cable carriers such as Comcast Corp. and Charter Communications Inc. Ahead of the December 14 commission vote that ended those Obama-era net neutrality regulations, current FCC Chairman Ajit Pai called those same rules a " heavy-handed, utility-style.mistake" and pledged to stop the federal government from "micromanaging" the internet by introducing a new set of "internet freedom" regulations. Those protections are transparency rules that require ISPs to publicly disclose any blocking, throttling, or paid prioritization.

The internet probably won't immediately become (more of) a dystopian nightmare.

Lori Miller, with activist group Indivisible Rapid City, believes dumping Net Neutrality was a mistake. But like many ardent net neutrality supporters, Schaub said he thinks it will take a while for the repeal to trickle down to customers, saying it will be more like "small and creeping changes rather than sudden shifts".

Advocates argue the repeal of the Obama-era rules will promote faster internet and provide more competition. And in May, the Senate voted in favor of reversing the FCC's repeal; however, the measure still needs to be passed in the House of Representatives, where afterwards it will then need President Trump's signature.

For example, providers like Comcast, who were once blocked from slowing the streaming speed of competitors like Netflix, now have the ability to do so if they choose.

In Monday's op-ed, he repeated his argument that the internet thrived without net neutrality rules in place for most of its existence.

So, what will the internet of today look like tomorrow? ISPs may also sue the state, although no lawsuits have yet been reported.

But they could start charging extra for services not yet offered.

Broadband providers "remain committed to the principles under which internet innovation has thrived", Mr. Spalter said. Several states including NY and Washington, have passed regulations that impose net neutrality on a local level.
