Politicians visit border amid outrage on family separation

H2 propublica releases audio of crying children separated from parents

A harrowing recording from inside a border facility has added fuel to the controversy over the immigration policies that have separated thousands of children from their families.

The Mormon church said it is "deeply troubled" by the separation of families at the border and urged national leaders to find compassionate solutions.

The Department of Homeland Security reports that almost 2,000 children were sent to mass detention centers between April 19 and May 31. "This must stop. Now", Cruz said in a statement. "If that means introducing her bill in the House, I'd be honored to stand with her", he said.

Amnesty International argues that these acts deliberately inflict such mental suffering that they constitute torture - inflicted not just on adults facing harsh choices, but also children who can not make choices at all.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions slammed critics who faulted the policy for dividing families who illegally cross the U.S. border from Mexico, adding Mr Obama was responsible, Fox News reports. Even when the immediate suffering of the 2,000 already taken has passed, many will be affected for life by the trauma.

The separations - almost 2,000 children were separated from their parents between mid-April and the end of May - have been blasted by Democrats, some Republicans, medical professionals, rights activists and clergy.

Trump on Tuesday defended the policy, saying "we've got to stop separation of the families", but says: "we can't let people pour in".

There is no law mandating the separation of children and parents at the border. She repeated this in a tweet.

Both groups also used the occasion to again highlight Trump's failure to secure protections for "Dreamers", the name given to those immigrants who came to the U.S.as children and who were formerly protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which Trump himself ended ― yet puzzlingly blames Democrats for.

"We have the worst immigration laws in the entire world".

He, however, offered that he's encouraged by the public's reaction to the controversial policy.

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, pleaded with Republicans on the panel to end what he called "internment camps".

Around 2,000 minors have been separated from their families in the past six weeks, since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a zero tolerance policy where everyone caught crossing the border illegally will be prosecuted. Expanded facilities could be key, as migrant children separated from their parents are now housed by a different department, Health and Human Services. The children were placed in the custody of the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, according to reports.

The separation of these Central American children from their parents was triggered by the administration's decision to bring criminal charges against adults who enter the country without permission.

"You know they're coming in, they're people that came on merit, not based on a lottery or not people that snuck across the border".

"This must not be who we are as a nation", Representative Jerrold Nadler said, one of seven members of congress from NY and New Jersey who met with five detainees inside the facility, including three who said they had young relatives removed from their care after seeking asylum at the border.
