Champions bug hit Germany as Mexico hold on for a famous win

Germany coach Joachim Low lifts the 2014 World Cup

Mexico caused a huge upset by beating reigning World Cup holders Germany 1-0 with a Hirving Lozano counter-attack.

"The game against Saudi Arabia was actually a wake-up call".

Hirving Lozano's 35th-minute strike at the Luzhniki Stadium earned Mexico just the second win over Germany in history, as Loew's side paid the price for a dismal first half.

Mexico, meanwhile, were all smiles as Juan Carlos Osorio's squad went through training drills at their Novogorsk-Dynamo base.

Despite returning captain Manuel Neuer and the centre-back partnership of Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels, Joachim Low's men looked worryingly open. He outpaced Jerome Boateng and with a less than ideal pass found Lozano, who controlled the ball, cut inside Mesut Ozil, held off a charging Toni Kroos and slotted past Manuel Neuer.

Defending Champions Germany were stunned by a resilient Mexican team who ran out 1-0 winners in the opening match of the group.

"The phrase today was to play for the love of winning not for the fear of losing". "Due to injuries we had to change some of our protagonists but we always thought of having two quick players on the wing. The team has enough experience to deal with it and we will rise again". "What's most important is for Mexican football to grow". What we need to do now is do our homework and win our next game.

Finishing second in the group could well mean facing Brazil rather than Switzerland or Serbia in the next round.

One area where Mexico needs to improve is scoring goals after netting just once in its last four friendlies - and that was against Scotland, which hasn't qualified for the World Cup in the last 20 years.

After Sami Khedira lost possession, Javier Hernandez triggered a lightning counter before finding a charging Lozano, who cut inside a covering Ozil and lashed low inside Neuer's near post to spark deafening roars from the sizeable Mexico support.

Mexico had much of the 80,000 crowd in Luzhniki Stadium on their feet as the Germans left ever greater gaps at the back, and the wastefulness notably of Hernandez on the final pass may reassure future opponents that Mexico, while determined to end a Cinderella reputation, have not replaced Germany as favorites.

Youngster Julian Brandt almost saved Low's night after taking over from Werner in the final minutes when he blasted a shot past Ochoa's right post, and even goalkeeper Neuer came up for a corner in injury time.

But it was not to be. "With all respect, I think in the first half of the match that we were the superior team".

But their reputation is not what it was. "We certainly do not do that", Low said in an interview on the German federation's official website, www.dfb.de.

Germany, on the other hand, took too long to get going and lacked the poise the rest of the world has grown accustomed to seeing on this stage.
