Theresa May makes Conservative MPs a Brexit offer they can't decipher

Ken Clarke recently a favourite of liberal Remainers but long a Conservative minister

MPs are set to stage an audacious power grab on Tuesday which could completely change the Government's Brexit strategy.

A statement from the Department for Exiting the European Union on Tuesday said David Davis had set three tests for any new amendment: not undermining the negotiations; not changing the constitutional role of parliament and government in negotiating worldwide treaties; and respecting the referendum result.

The Bill will return to the Lords on June 18, kicking off a process of "Parliamentary ping-pong" which sees it bounce from House to House until agreement is reached.

She now relies on the support of a small Northern Irish party.

"We must think about the message parliament will send to the European Union this week", she said to the 1922 Committee, according to her office.

He warned that such rumours were damaging to the Brexit talks because European Union negotiators "read all the British newspapers avidly and believe them all".

"We have not, and will not, agree to the House of Commons binding the Government's hands in the negotiations".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "I understand the difficulties MPs representing constituencies which voted strongly for Leave or Remain have on the EEA amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill".

There was little doubt the government would win on the customs union and single market, which some pro-EU lawmakers say is the only way for Britain to retain economically advantageous close ties with the bloc, with the opposition Labour Party also divided over future relations.

Mr Rees-Mogg told Newsnight that the concessions sought by Tories including Dominic Grieve would "gum up" negotiations with the EU.

Instead, the government has proposed reporting its efforts to secure a customs "arrangement".

He also warned that Britain "would not be ready in time" for Brexit and called for a referendum on the terms of the final deal.

Another flashpoint could come when lawmakers vote Wednesday on an amendment seeking to keep Britain in a customs union with the EU. It contains the caveat that MPs can examine changes in smaller groups - meaning they won't be held up by scrutiny in the Commons chamber.

Trade issues make the front of the i, which reports that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is in the line of fire as a "global trade war" escalates.

Bill revokes the 1972 Act which took the United Kingdom into the European Economic Area, but also transposes all relevant EU law into British statute so there are no holes in the law book at the point of Brexit.

Here's a look at which amendments matter most for the direction of Brexit.

Citizens would be able to challenge any domestic laws introduced if it seriously went against the European Union laws copied over after Brexit.

Dr Lee was was slapped down by Downing Street in January after breaking ranks to express concern about the economic impact of Brexit on the UK.

"Of course, the Lords has a revising role to play - but some of the amendments that were passed and the comments that were made went far beyond that".

Earlier this month, the Labour leadership drafted its own amendment to replace the one of the EEA, demanding a vote on negotiating a new single market deal with the bloc.

Theresa May would have to get approval from Parliament before beginning negotiations on the UK's future relationship with the EU. Pro-EU lawmakers welcomed it as a signal that the government is giving up on a "no deal" Brexit.

After PMQs, a No 10 source was asked if that meant, "as far as the government's concerned, clause C is not up for discussion as part of this amendment?" This was originally changed following pressure in the Commons from Brexit-backing MPs who wanted to ensure the date of departure was written into law.

Meanwhile, Ireland's premier raised the possibility of delaying Brexit to allow more time to negotiate the UK's exit deal.
