Trump relents, issues order to stop separation of illegal families

A CBP official said it is up to the discretion of border agents whether to detain "tender-aged" children, who are typically less than five years old.

Senate Minority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer said the Trump administration has been sending babies and young children to what they call "tender age facilities".

Trump's executive order requires the Pentagon to make military bases near the border available to detain immigrant families. It was not regrettable collateral damage; it was part of the point. And once a parent is in an adult detention facility, it is unlikely HHS can release their child back to them, as they would not qualify as a sponsor. Trump has instructed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to ask a federal court to overturn the settlement.

John Sandweg, a former director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said he was "really shocked" to see the executive order did not address the issue.

It was a warning meant to horrify and discourage. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and others that would allow detained families to stay together in custody while expediting their hearings and possible deportation proceedings.

"I think Trump takes issues on in his own direct way, but it doesn't fit the politically correct narrative of the media or the Democrats", said Klabechek, who is retired.

He had tried to blame Democrats for the policy of separating children from parents and force them into concessions, including funding for a wall he wants to build along the border with Mexico.

"It is placing a tremendous strain on a system that was already struggling to provide these kids with their constitutionally mandated protections", Baxter-Neal said.

Until now, however, it's been unknown where they are. The AP report also cited an adult who saw bruises and broken bones the children said were caused by guards.

The president directed Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to maintain custody of detained families during criminal proceedings and as their asylum claims are adjudicated.

That miscalculation weighed more heavily on the administration as each day passed.

Both House bills, which Democrats and immigration advocacy groups oppose, would fund Trump's proposed wall and reduce legal migration, in part by denying visas for some relatives of USA residents and citizens living overseas. Republican women, independents and Hispanics were all overwhelmingly against it.

As deflated members of his staff either rush for the exits or distance themselves from his whims, Trump is largely alone. Even though internal discussions about confronting the child detentions had been ongoing for a week, Trump's decision to sign an executive order still caught some of his closest aides off-guard.

It has been a bad thing for the families torn apart, and some of them, it is becoming frighteningly clear, may never recover, may never be brought back together again. Biden, who has not ruled out a presidential run in 2020, said the Republican administration threatened to turn the United States into the world's "pariah".

Sessions, who announced and defended the "zero-tolerance" policy over the course of the past month, is already Trump's most hated Cabinet official for his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation. "This afternoon would be good", Trump said. More cheers, more applause. As the country dives into summer and then surfaces in midterm campaign season, Trump's return to immigration themes is inevitable because his conviction "that's why I got elected" is unshakable.

They are the first wave of an estimated 2,300 children separated from their parents since early May, who until Wednesday seemed destined to come under the jurisdiction of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. Nielsen, who'd become the face of the separation policy after the contentious briefing on Monday, was heckled at a Mexican restaurant a block from the White House. Families will also be prioritized in the adjudication process.

During the course of the week, governors of the US states of Colorado, Maryland, Rhode Island and NY ordered their state assets such as National Guard personnel or equipment be refrained from being used to support the Trump administration's mission to secure the US-Mexico border.

The action came after a firestorm of protest from administration opponents and allies, reacting to pictures and sounds of young children traumatized by their separation from their parents at the hands of US authorities. Breitbart may judge that he caved this week, but its readers will still have him as their champion.
