Japan halts missile drills after Trump-Kim summit

Poll reveals what voters think about Trump Kim summit

He also speculated about the eventual withdrawal of 28,500 United States troops from South Korea.

Also, on Saturday, the US military began moving caskets to North Korea for the recovery of some remains, the U.N. Command in South Korea said in a statement.

Army Gen. Vincent Brooks, of the United Nations Command and U.S. Forces-Korea commander, will formally receive the remains at Osan, South Korea, from civilian drivers.

State broadcaster CCTV said Xi told Kim that through the "concerted efforts of the relevant countries" negotiations regarding issues on the Korean Peninsula are back on track and the overall situation is moving in the direction of peace and stability.

"In support of upcoming diplomatic negotiations led by Secretary Pompeo, additional decisions will depend upon the DPRK continuing to have productive negotiations in good faith", White continued, using the acronym for the official name of North Korea.

There had been contact with North Korean officials since the summit, the US State Department said.

At their summit, Kim and Trump signed a pledge "to work towards complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", a stock phrase favored by Pyongyang that stopped short of longstanding USA demands for North Korea to give up its atomic arsenal in a "verifiable" and "irreversible" way.

A USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, played down the significance of suspending the Korean Marine Exchange Program training exercises, saying they were relatively minor.

Pompeo said USA allies and North Korea's neighbour and ally China were supportive of the U.S. policy of maintaining sanctions on Pyongyang until its denuclearisation was complete.

Ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk said Tuesday that Seoul and Beijing share a "strategic goal" in achieving the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula and that progress in nuclear diplomacy has facilitated high-level contacts between North Korea and its neighbors.

US President Donald Trump on Friday cited "an unusual and extraordinary threat" from North Korea's nuclear arsenal to extend sanctions on Kim Jong Un's regime, despite touting the success of a historic summit earlier this month.

More than 36,000 USA troops died in the conflict, including those listed as missing in action. "I wouldn't expect that at this point".

About 7,700 US military personnel still remain unaccounted for from the 1950-53 Korean War, US military data show. However, China is North Korea's biggest trading partner.

In late May, before the June 12 Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, Pyongyang said it had fully demolished its only known nuclear test site. North Korea's posturing could be China's way of leveraging its involvement in negotiations versus the $50 Billion worth of tariffs imposed by Trump's administration.
