North Korea Limits Family Reunions

US moves 100 coffins to inter Korean border for war remainsMore

Singapore said on Sunday it spent Singaporean $16.3 million ($12 million) on the historic US-North Korea summit, adding it was less than initially anticipated after some in the city-state complained about the high cost.

The rally, which typically marks the start of a month of events commemorating the 1950-53 Korean war and denouncing the United States, has been held for years and last year attracted 100,000 people in the capital, Pyongyang.

In a statement, a U.D. official said the timeline will clarify what the implementation of the summit agreement should look like.

The prime minister also said at the ceremony the United States and South Korea have chose to suspend joint military exercises and the North and South agreed to reunite 100 individuals from each side during a family reunion late August.

This year's anniversary comes less than two weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump shook hands at the unprecedented summit in Singapore.

Referring to Trump's decision to suspend joint military exercises with South Korea, which North Korea has long denounced as provocative, Pompeo told CNN this move would last "only so long as there is a good faith negotiation progress, productive results being achieved".

"We hope that we will have an ongoing process of making progress", CNN quoted him as saying.

"Japan should stop its large-scale military drills and the boosting of its military capacity aimed at attacking (Korea), scrap its hostile policy against us, break with the past and show its sincerity towards peace", it said in a commentary.

North Korea has also tried to withhold its participation in family reunions until certain political conditions are met, such as halting activists in the South from sending outside information into the North.

In addition to toning down its anti-US rhetoric, North Korea has also reportedly transferred the remains of soldiers who died in the 1950-53 war to the border with South Korea.

The North's agreement to hold only a single week of reunions for 100 families, falls far short of what many expected after Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in promised "comprehensive and groundbreaking advancement of inter-Korean relations" in their joint declaration at the end of the inter-Korean summit in April.

Pompeo himself told reporters the day after the Singapore summit Washington hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea within Trump's current term, which ends on January 20, 2021.

North Korea's decidedly less strident posture these days underscores the delicate position it finds itself in after decades of touting the United States as its archenemy.
