Trump adviser Kushner says he's 'ready to work' with Abbas

Top Trump adviser Jared Kushner, Middle East emissary Jason Greenblatt and U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman held a four-hour meeting with Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Israeli aides said. Kushner cast doubt on Abbas' ability to make a deal, saying the Palestinian leadership is "scared we will release our peace plan and the Palestinian people will actually like it" because it would offer them a better life.

Palestinian officials, who want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, accused Kushner of trying to undermine Abbas and what they described as their leader's moderate camp.

But Palestinians insist that the eastern part of Jerusalem will one day be the capital of their future state, a position supported by the global community.

PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat said Kushner's interview "again illustrates the U.S. refusal to talk substance, to mention Palestinian rights or a Palestinian state".

He said his wife was "very sorry" she was not able to join him on the trip so soon after the April birth of their son, Louis.

East Jerusalem was part of the Arab-controlled West Bank until it was seized by Israel during the Six Day War in 1967.

In his statement Dr.al-Qedra denounced the ongoing Israeli military targeting of medics in the Gaza Strip, and said the soldiers shot two medics, including one woman, and added that at least eight of the wounded Palestinians are children.

That evening, he will begin his history-making visit to the Jewish state and occupied West Bank during which he will meet both Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

The Palestinian Authority has repeatedly said the USA "deal of the century" for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict falls way short of their expectations for a lasting and just peace settlement.

"Mr Kushner's interview further clarified that the United States administration of President Trump has actually moved from the squares of negotiations to the squares of dictations". The Palestinian leader, Kushner said, "says that he is committed to peace, and I don't have any reason to disbelieve him".

Asked by Al Quds editor-in-chief Walid Abu-Zalaf how his plan differs from those that came before, Kushner said he and his team had "spent a lot of time listening, and focusing on the people".

Kushner represented the White House at the grand opening of the newly-inaugurated US Embassy in Jerusalem in March, which saw fierce clashes between the Israeli military and Palestinian protesters that left over 100 people dead and thousands injured.

The visit comes after a flare-up of hostilities between Israel and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

This Hamas-provoked tit-for-tat resembles similar sequences of events that took place two weeks ago in a violent escalation between the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Israel. It is likely to focus on what are called interim issues, such as security and the economy, and not on "aspirational" issues like Palestinian statehood.
