Apple and Samsung Settle Patent Infringement Lawsuit

Apple and Samsung settle their patent dispute after 7 years of legal battles

Apple and Samsung have settled their seven-year patent dispute over Apple's allegations that Samsung copied the iPhone's design and software, reports CNN.

Neither Apple nor Samsung has commented on this new development.

Now, nearly seven years since the feud begun, the companies have finally reached a settlement and the case is being closed, according to a court document.

In a filing at a district court in San Jose, California, late on Wednesday, the two tech giants notified the judge that that "they have agreed to drop and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter".

The case dates back to 2011, when Apple, under the direction Steve Jobs, vowed to launch the legal equivalent of "thermonuclear war" against Samsung and other Android phone vendors Apple was convinced were ripping off designs it had patented for the iPhone.

The document doesn't specify the terms of the settlement, so it's unclear if Samsung agreed to pay the $539 million it was supposed to, or if a different agreement was reached.

"We believe deeply in the value of design", said the spokesperson, "and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers".

"This case has always been about more than money", the statement read. "It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple".

The case had been sent back to the district court following a Supreme Court decision to revisit an earlier $400 million damage award.

The first ruling demanded that Samsung pay Apple roughly $1 billion to close the case, but numerous appeals have since extended the battle to 2018, with Samsung continuously attempting to reduce that number.

Samsung paid $548 million of the $1.05 billion owed to Apple in 2015, but appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the $399 million decision.
