Hundreds of Women's March Protesters Arrested in Senate Office Building

WASHINGTON DC- JUNE 28 Protesters march from Freedom Plaza to demonstrate against family detentions and to demand the end of criminalizing efforts of asylum seekers and immigrants

Jayapal later spoke out on her arrest, and called her detainment "courageous".

Immigration activists rally as part of a march calling for "an end to family detention" and in opposition to the immigration policies of the Trump administration, in Washington, U.S., June 28, 2018.

Congressmember Pramila Jayapal was arrested Thursday at a demonstration in Washington D.C., protesting the Trump administration's controversial immigration policies. The protesters, mostly women dressed in white, chanted, "Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here". The women sat in the building in protest of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' "zero tolerance" policy that maintains a hard line on illegal border crossings.

Attendees will include several other women who also participated in Thursday's demonstrationand were arrested by U.S. Capitol Police.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have both spoken out against the Trump administration's practice of separating families, citing the grave psychological damage being done to both children and parents who have been forcibly separated-many after fleeing violence in their home countries.

Several prominent members of Congress, including Sen.

"These folks are out here fighting for the core principles of our nation, and I applaud them for it", Merkley said in an interview.

"I'm proud to have been arrested with them", Jayapal said in a Twitter video after her arrest.

Ana Maria Archila, executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy, said calling for the disbandment of ICE "would have seemed absurd even a few months ago".

The female-led protest in Washington, D.C., is one of the multiple anti-ICE protests that occurred on Thursday.

"I met with all 174 of the women that were there, and it was absolutely heartbreaking to hear their stories, to hear about how their children had been taken away".

Most of the children who had been separated from their families before the order was signed have not yet been reunited with them.

The Women's March announced its plans for the last week and held training meetings in the days leading up to it.

For Ingrid Zelaya, who works in communications at the immigrant advocacy group CASA, this was not her first protest, but it was her first act of civil disobedience. "Camps for children is just as wrong as camps for children and adults".
