Capital Gazette Leaves Its Editorial Section Blank Day After Shooting

5 killed in Maryland newspaper shooting

Prosecutors say 38-year-old Jarrod W. Ramos opened fire Thursday in the newsroom.

"There was a fear that doing so would exacerbate an already flammable situation", Altomare said.

The suspect has been identified as Jarrod Ramos, who had a long-standing grudge against the paper over a 2011 article about a criminal harassment case brought against him by a former high school classmate. He was held without bail. I didn't. But one of the surviving employees of The Gazette, quoted in numerous reports of the shooting, is the son of a childhood friend who I've kept in touch with over the years and whose father was my fifth-grade Hebrew school teacher.

In a letter to the company's president filed in court records, Ramos said the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics requested he be removed from his job.

Investigators are reviewing Ramos's social media postings and searching his apartment, where Altomare said they found evidence that he had been planning the attack.

Ramos, who wore a navy jumpsuit, did not speak or enter a plea. The request was denied. The suspect, Jarrod W. Ramos, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder in one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in USA history. Four journalists and an advertising saleswoman were killed.

"You now have people saying, 'Police should be patrolling the internet, '" Scharf said.

Authorities said he was "uncooperative" with interrogators.

While we can not discount the importance of the narrative that's been created by this current administration, tirelessly working to vilify the legitimate press, it's unsurprising to hear that at the root of the hatred the alleged shooter, Jarrod Ramos, bore for the Gazette was another all-too-familiar point: obsessive, possibly abusive behavior towards a woman.

Ramos nearly regularly posted about wanting members of the staff to kill themselves, hoping the paper would shut down and would repeatedly include the hashtag #CapDeathWatch.

The account went dormant from January 2016 until 2.37pm Thursday when a message appeared: "F-- you, leave me alone".

When he was apprehended at the scene of the horrific crime in Annapolis, Ramos had no identification and seemingly would not speak to police.

Thomas Marquardt, the Capital Gazette's former publisher, said he reported Ramos's behaviour to the police. "I just thought I was being friendly", she said.

Jarrod Ramos is charged with murder after police say he opened fire Thursday at The Capital in Annapolis. McCarthy said his client was so scared by the harassment that she bought a gun and eventually moved from the state. Once inside, he killed journalist and columnist Rob Hiaasen; editorial page editor Gerald Fischman; special publications editor Wendi Winters; writer John McNamara, and sales assistant Rebecca Smith.

Surviving journalists decamped to a nearby parking garage to produce Friday's edition of their newspaper. The newspaper was published on Friday as promised.

Gillespie said he heard a colleague scream, "No!"

The mayor of Annapolis, Gavin Buckley, addressed public views of the press after the attack on Thursday. The Gazette ran a story reporting on the case and Ramos apparently became enraged.

"He was as angry an individual as I have ever seen", McCarthy said. "I even told my wife, 'We have to be concerned".

At the White House, spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said: "There is no room for violence, and we stick by that". "They're all good people just trying to support a local newspaper, and now everyone is wondering how could this have happened".
