Hume: GOP Sens. Collins, Murkowski Key to Success of Trump SCOTUS Pick

Sen. Susan Collins R Maine and Sen. Lisa Murkowski R-Alaska left are shown during a news conference at the Capitol in Washington. The Senate battle over Donald Trump's new Supreme Court nominee is off

Donald Trump has interviewed four candidates to replace Anthony Kennedy, the retiring supreme court justice, and may interview two or more additional potential picks, leaving White House staff members scrambling to complete a vetting process in time for the planned announcement of the president's pick on Monday 9 July.

Judicial Crisis Network's ad is part of a seven-figure national cable and digital campaign, and praises Trump's list of 25 potential nominees for the court, before going on to decry "extremist" Democrats who they claim will "lie and attack" the President's eventual nominee.

Hume said if Trump loses the support of Collins and Murkowski "it's hard to believe" the Republicans would "pick up any Democrats" to achieve a majority confirming the nominee.

Collins said she and fellow Republican Sen.

Collins has told CNN she couldn't support a nominee who "demonstrated hostility" toward Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that affirmed women's right to abortion.

"I'm going to pick someone who is outstanding", he said.

" one Twitter user wrote, sharing a picture of a coat hanger, while another added: "Nobody should trust what Collins says". Coney Barrett, who sits on the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago, is just 46 and would give Trump an opportunity to leave a long-lasting imprint on the court.

The four candidates interviewed so far, first reported by the Above the Law blog, are all federal appeals court judges whose names appear on a list of 25 supreme court prospects published previous year by the White House.

Even though Republicans changed Senate rules a year ago to allow confirmation by simple majority, if Democrats hold together, they can not afford defections.

Justin Clark, in his position as director of the Office of Public Liaison, will oversee outreach with key constituencies, coalitions, grass-roots organizations and allies, the White House said. Trump also spoke about the increasing number of Democrats who have called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), something Trump said he considers also considers beneficial for Republicans headed into the midterms. John McCain, R-Ariz., is out as he battles brain cancer.

On Sunday, Leonard Leo, an outside adviser to Trump on judicial nominations, said he expected Trump to select a nominee who is mindful of precedent but who is also more "originalist and textualist".

"There is keen interest in those two, but there are at least a couple of others who are still very seriously in the mix", said the person.

Sen. Claire McCaskill questions Secretary of Defense James Mattis about a new report detailing procurement violations involving a defense contractor at a hearing held by the Senate Armed Services Committee, April 26, 2018, in Washington. The ads will start appearing on Wednesday. Vice President Mike Pence can break a tie.
